Cut the Daikon
Tadahiro Gunji’s collage works explore the relationship between past and present through layered compositions built on vintage book covers. Incorporating imagery gathered from New York City and upstate landscapes alongside vintage papers, Japanese washi, and hand-painted patterns, the works bring together materials that carry their own histories and associations.
By placing contemporary fragments onto aged surfaces, Gunji creates what he describes as an “in-between” space—an interval where different times, places, and experiences coexist. These collages serve not only as finished works but also as source material for his ongoing Collectivity series, extending a process of layering, transformation, and visual dialogue across bodies of work.
